Luminus and GLT recently announced a partnership to develop PhlatLight-based, edge lit backlight units (BLUs) for large-screen LCD TVs. The two companies demonstrated a 24-inch BLU prototype at the 2006 SID (Society for Information Display) International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition in San Francisco last month. The prototype is designed to allow large-size LCD panels to be edge-lit as opposed to direct backlighting, resulting in a dramatically reduced LED count and simplified color and thermal management, compared to conventional LED-based backlighting solutions.
Our recent analysis of the LCD backlight technology market suggested that innovations in backlight technology, especially LED-based edge-lit architectures, would help enable the adoption of this technology at a faster rate than commonly anticipated,” said Insight Media President, Chris Chinnock. “The prototype that GLT and Luminus demonstrated at SID is exactly the type of innovation we were anticipating.”
The SID International Symposium is the leading North American tradeshow for the electronic-display industry. The event, with more than 550 booths and 7,500 attendees, provides access to a wide range of technology applications such as high-definition flat-panel displays and large-area projection-display systems.
